Community Gardening

Picture
Join us Wednesday evenings 5:00-7:00 from April - October for Community Time in the Garden.
Our community garden is a hybrid garden model where some plots are open to the community and others are rented to private gardeners.  We practice ecological gardening, which means that we do not use any inorganic pesticides or insecticides.

Children's Garden

Picture
We offer on-site workshops and camps for children of all ages.
We offer on-site workshops and hands on lessons for children from preschools, elementary schools, and up. We welcome youth organizations throughout the community to contact us about ways we can work with your program to educate children about gardening, soil, composting, food preparation/preservation, pollinators, and more!

Harvest for the Food Bank

Picture
Our volunteers harvest from our community beds weekly for local food banks and feeding programs.
Food growing in our community garden beds are harvested by our garden volunteers mostly for the Chevy Chase food bank. We typically harvest every Monday morning. The produce is used by the center to cook the lunches they serve 4 days of week and for their Meal on Wheels programs. Produce not used for the cooking is offered for gleaning for the members of the food bank.

Food Forest

Food Forest
Come often to see our forest develop and become part of our efforts in creating the first community food forest in our area.
We began planting our Food Forest project in the fall of 2019 with native fruit trees such as pawpaw, serviceberry, mulberry, persimmon, and elderberry bushes. We also have chestnut, plum and apple trees, as well as blueberry bushes. Little by little, as the forest develops, we will add other layers of shrubs, and perennial plants all of which will provide food that can be foraged.

Pollinator Meadow

Picture
Local Pennsylvania butterflies, bees, birds, and insects rely on host family for pollen and nectar from these native plants.
Our pollinator meadow and garden is a feast for our senses, quick to flower, easy to replicate in one’s own garden, and includes many native plants. In the spring of 2019, we started the transformation of a grass area by seeding and planting a wide range of native flowers. The pollinator garden evolves with each season and each year with some type of plants living only for a few seasons while other will bloom only after a few years.
